Hunger is the main outcome of poverty

While most of us can afford more than three meals a day, with an added convenience of doorstep delivery, it is the underprivileged and the less fortunate that suffers the most. The lack of income results in the poor having limited or no access to sufficient food, let alone access to healthy meals.

  • India ranks 107th out of the 121 countries as per Global Hunger Index

  • Approximately 4500 children die every day under the age of five years in the country due to hunger and malnutrition, amounting to over three lakh deaths every year, owing to hunger, of children alone

  • Approximately 19 crore people in the country were compelled to sleep on an empty stomach every night (As per National Health Survey 2017)

  • There is a strong connection between hunger and chronic diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes

  • India is home to the largest undernourished population in the world

  • 189.2 million people i.e. 14% of our population is undernourished

  • 20% of children under 5 are underweight

  • 34.7% of children under 5 years of age are stunted

  • 51.4% women in the reproductive age (15-49 years) are anaemic

  • Malnutrition caused 69 per cent of deaths of children below the age of five in India. (2019 UNICEF report)
